Hundreds of students of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students( GNUPS) have besieged the Ministry of Education to ask why the ministry has failed to resolve the strike by Polytechnic Teachers Association Of Ghana (POTAG).
According to the group, the march is in solidarity with POTAG who have been on strike for over a month following government’s failure to pay their Book and Research Allowance for the 2013/2014 academic year.
POTAG was dragged to court by the National Labor Commission in a bid to impress on POTAG to call off the strike.
The NLC said that POTAG failed to comply with the provisions of the Labour Act, regarding notification to embark on a strike, thus declaring it as illegal .
The case is still in court.
Mr. Kwame Amponsah Manu, the National Coordinating Secretary for GNUPS who spoke on behalf of the group, told Citi News that the students are tired of government’s indifference to POTAG’s strike.
“What we are doing today is marching and some students have even come from the other regions just to be here, we simply want to ask the government: is it committed to putting together frameworks to ensure that our right to education is enforced? We also want to ask the ministry why it has been reluctant in bringing our lecturers back to the classroom. It is not a protest but a march to demand answers.”
He also said that they will not leave the ministry until they are assured that their lecturers will go back to the classroom .
“We are not leaving here until they come out and tell us to go back to our campuses because our lecturers are coming back to the classroom”
