Ghanaian Diplomat, Thomas Kwasi Quartey, has been appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the African Union (AU).
The former Secretary to Ex-President John Mahama’s appointment, was elected today [Monday] January 30, 2017, at the opening of the 28th Ordinary session of the African Union (AU) in Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
President Akufo-Addo in a tweet on Monday [January 30, 2017] congratulated and wished Mr. Quartey the best in his new role.
Guinean President, Alpha Conde, has also been appointed the new chairperson of the African Union (AU).
The new leaders of the African Union (AU) take over from the previous administration headed by Chad president, Idriss Deby, whose term of office has expired.
Addressing the heads of state following his election, Mr. Conde pledged to serve the pan-African body with dedication for the traditional one-year revolving term.
The opening of the 2-day session saw the presence of UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo and other African leaders are attending the event.
‘About Amb. Kwasi Quartey’
Ambassador Kwasi Quartey is a Ghanaian diplomat who joined the foreign service of Ghana in 1977, and rose through the ranks to become the ambassador to Cuba, Belgium, UN, AU and Ethiopia.
He held several diplomatic appointments including Director of Passports from 2004 to 2006, and deputy high commissioner to the U.K
Being a bilingual, he was appointed as the Secretary for Ex-President John Mahama in 2015.
He is a senior advocate in the Superior Court of Ghana, and is married to Audrey Quartey with four daughters.
