AFCON 2017: Grant seeks good fortune to end trophy drought

Head Coach of the Black Stars, Avram Grant has admitted he would need more luck if he is to win the AFCON 2017 Tournament with Ghana.

Ghana will be seeking to end its 35-year-old AFCON drought by winning the 2017 edition and have already booked their place in the quarterfinals, with two wins from their opening two games.

Avram Grant has had some hard luck in finals in his coaching career, which includes a UEFA Champions League final loss as Chelsea manager, an English F.A. Cup final loss as Portsmouth manager and most recently the AFCON final loss to Cote d’Ivoire.

Grant says he is aiming for another final appearance in this tournament and says the outcome will be different if Ghana makes the final.

“This team and I, if I may say, have achieved a lot of things. I went to the final with Chelsea, where we were the better side, but lost on penalties.”

“We were the better side last AFCON, everybody saw, but we lost on penalties. I came to the F.A Cup final with Portsmouth, against Chelsea, and we lost.”

“So I think I’m lucky to have come this far, but I need a little bit more luck, but on the football side we did a very good job in all these tournaments.”

“I hope that we do the same job here, but I know it will not be easy to come to the same stage. But if we come to this stage it will be different.”

Ghana next faces Egypt in Port Gentil on Wednesday and will be hoping to progress to the quarters with their 100% record intact.
