Calm has been restored to the Tatale Constituency in the Northern Region, after inter-ethnic clashes between the Bassares and Kokombas on Friday.

The clash followed a demonstration against the Paramount Chief of the area on Thursday, and threats to kill Kokombas if a District Chief Executive (DCE) was not appointed from the Bassares lineage.

The demonstration was held by agitating youth of the Bassare tribe after suspicions that the President was going to appoint a DCE who was Kokomba.

Subsequently, soldiers and police in the Northern Region were deployed to the area to calm tensions there.

Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tatale Constituency, James Amadu Bintim, said the issue has been solved amicably.

He added that, both tribes have been asked to submit petitions to the regional office for their preferred DCE to be forwarded to the President for consideration.

“Nobody at present has started appointing District Chief Executives in the region. At the local level, they even have to write an application to the chairman and he will then send it to the regional, and they will take action on it. They will then sit down and have consultations with the executives and send us the fellow they think can occupy that particular portfolio,” Mr. Bintim explained.
