The medical team at the funeral of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem II, has assured it is well placed to provide any possible medical care following reports of a mourner who sustained musket shot wounds.
The Coordinator of the team, Dr. Alberta Britwum Nyarko, confirmed a mourner was accidentally shot by a traditional executioner, known locally as the obrafour, but said medical personnel were on hand to provide emergency care for the wounded person.

“We were on alert to receive the case because we are working with them and the patient has been seen and stabilized so we are happy with the outcome of that,” Dr. Nyarko said in an interview with Citi News.
She also outlined some other medical cases her team has been dealing with during the four-day funeral rites.
“Apart from the intoxication, we see a lot of headaches and then we see a lot of what we call hypocalcemia, having your blood sugar going lower than normal. This is because people are not eating and they come and queue for long. We also see a lot of dehydration.”
Dr. Nyarko explained further that, “because of the age bracket of people coming to a function like this, we expect some people to have chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes and therefore we are not surprised to be seeing some of these emergencies.”
“We will also get cases of hysteria, people who will cry and cry and get out of control but we are managing all these cases,” she added.
The late Asantehemaa is lying in state at the Manhyia Palace, where mourners will be filing past her body until Thursday, when she would finally be buried.
She died at the age of 111 in November 2016, and will be buried in Breman on tomorrow [Thursday].
