A former Mayor of Accra, Nat Nunoo Amarteifio, is questioning the practicality of President Akufo Addo’s proposed Ministry for Inner Cities and Zongo Development.

Making a case for the existing local government structure, Mr. Amartefio wondered how inner cities would be singled out for special attention considering the existing local government administration.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9Qz5cV0q8JyhqP07l3uT32kUF4iI3CMj”]President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday announced the creation of the Ministry for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, which he said will operate from the Flagstaff House.

Some Ghanaians have however expressed divergent views about the new ministry.

Speaking to Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu, the former mayor said the current local government system would have to be reviewed in order for the new proposal to be implemented.

The current local government system according to him, seeks to do “its best to try and bring the same development in these places. I personally find it a little bit odd to imagine how you are going to divide these inner cities from the parent city.”

“Where is the line of division? How far will your development go? Those are very important questions and those are the ones we should be dealing with and I have no idea how they are going to formulate this. Obviously, the whole system of local system would have to be revalued. Once you start imposing special facilities for places you call the inner cities, it looks like you will be institutionalizing some of the inequalities we’ve been discussing in the city,” he added.

Our promises to Zongos will be in first budget

The Minister of Information nominee, Mustapha Hamid had during the campaign of the New Patriotic Party assured that promises made to Zongo communities will be captured in their first budget in 2017.
