The Ministry of Health has given authorities of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) a two week ultimatum to produce the bodies of five dead babies, including that of Suwaiba Mumin.
This was part of the recommendations made by a committee instituted by the Minister OF Health, Sherry Ayitey to investigate circumstances that led the sudden disappearance of a baby at the KATH shortly after birth.
Although hospital authorities say the baby was born dead the family is discounting the report.
Four additional babies have also been declared missing in addition to Suwaiba Mumin’s child.
Addressing the press on Friday the Minister of Health, Sherry Ayitey said hospital authorities will be sanctioned if they fail to produce the missing baby.
“At about 3: 50 am on the 5th February, Madam Mumin delivered a stillborn baby; meanwhile before she delivered the baby, the doctor came the second time to examine her and the doctor for the second time a fetal beat so we are giving the hospital fourteen working days to tell us the whereabouts of all the five still born babies delivered on February, 5th 2014,” the Minister insisted.
The Health Ministry has also directed the doctor and nurse under whose watch the still-born baby at the hospital went missing, to proceed on leave.
The two have therefore been referred to the Medical and Dental Council as well as the Nurses and Midwifery Council for appropriate actions to be taken against them.
Meanwhile, the uncle of the baby, Mohammed Rahman, has indicated that there will be a peaceful walk to prevent further incidents from happening at the hospital.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, he stated the crusade will also create an avenue for the family to press home their demands and educate the public on the problems associated with the KATH hospital
Asked how the mother of the missing baby was taking the news, he stated that the Department of Social Welfare and her family were playing their role to ensure that she is consoled.
