The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has served notice he will claim to the last penny, damages awarded him by the High Court on Thursday in a defamation suit brought against the Daily Guide newspaper.

He said contrary to assertions that “the intention is just to go to court and get a judgement and not to pursue the claims, I am promising you that I will pursue my rights to the debt. I will take the money.”

The Accra Fast Track High Court 6 on Thursday awarded GHC 250,000 in damages to Mr. Asiedu Nketia after he sued the newspaper for publishing a story that suggested he built two mansions during late Professor John Mills’ administration.

The NDC General Secretary who addressed a press briefing after the ruling said his decision to retrieve the total sum from Daily Guide is to serve a lesson to recalcitrant media houses.

He indicated that the money will be used to “build a house and I will write in front of it ‘Kwasia bi nti’ [because of a certain fool]” adding that the amount puts him in the range of billionaires.”

Mr. Asiedu Nketia opined that the corruption is not the biggest problem in Ghana but “it is more of dishonesty and lying” and it can only be addressed if dishonesty and lying is made “very expensive.”
