Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan, became the highest-scoring African in World Cup finals history after his goal against Portugal on Thursday.

Gyan scored his second of this tournament, and his sixth overall at the finals, after heading home Kwadwo Asamoah’s delightful cross in the 57th minute, taking him clear of Cameroon’s Roger Milla who scored five goals at the finals.

His goal put Ghana level after Portugal had taken the lead through a John Boye own goal, but a late Cristiano Ronaldo winner for the Portuguese consigned both teams to elimination from the tournament.

Gyan spoke of his disappointment of Ghana’s elimination after the game but admitted that he was pleased with his personal achievement.

“Yeah, I am pleased with it[record]. I have got six goals so far,” Gyan said.

“Personally I am happy for this record but I am not happy right now because we’ve gone out.

“The first round exit was the first time in Ghana’s World Cup history.

“We are very disappointed. We have to go home and come back stronger.

“I have to thank everybody for their support, the whole of Ghana. They prayed for us and everything is done now.”
