The Upper East Regional Educational Directorate has bemoaned the poor performance of  candidates who write the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in the region, attributing it to the lack of effective contribution from teachers.

Speaking at the African Union day of the African Child, held in Bolga Tanga was organized by the department of children on the theme ‘A child-friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa’ Mr. Emmanuel Zumakpe, told Citi News, that the lack of effective supervision is the cause of  failure.

“Many of our teachers are not committed and that is a problem. The other issue is the abdication of responsibility by parents to teachers, and finally, the children themselves; many of them, when they register, they don’t come to the school again,” he complained.

He went on to say, “Supervision is a very serious issue. It’s interesting that even directors don’t have vehicles. The last time that we were supplied with motorbikes for monitoring was 4 years ago. We don’t have enough motorbikes to go around. Many of the supervisors are using their own motorbike and we don’t even give them money for maintenance. It impedes effective monitoring.”
