Where Ghanaians pay to get locked in ‘mystery’ rooms

Imagine waking up in a dark nondescript room with your hands cuffed.

Gradually, you realize that you have to make use of your environment to get out of the cuffs and find a way to escape the room. Somewhere, a clock counts down…

It sounds like an adventure movie, but this is in fact an experience you can have by signing up for the Real Escape Game at Freeing Africa.

Freeing Africa is a Real Escape Game center based in Maxmart 37, offering mystery games suitable for corporate team building, great kids activities, get-togethers and a chance to interact, unwind and bond. It is a franchise of the Freeing Group with a presence in Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

The basic concept of the game is simple. Participants are locked in a room, where they are given a set of clues and puzzles to solve in order to get out of the room. They are allocated 45 minutes to do so.

There are three rooms available, each with a unique theme:
Lost Chamber is a room, which can be played by two to five people at a go. The participants are handcuffed so they will have to solve the clues and get the keys to unlock the handcuffs, then find some more clues and escape the room.

Mirror of love has a theme of a love story. There was a couple that was deeply in love, then a time came when they had some differences. This room is the most difficult but also the most interesting.

Prison Chaos is a room which is actually made to look like a prison, with the participants acting as detective agents who try to get the others out.

According to Terrence Owusu, the Outlet Manager, this unique gaming concept is becoming quite popular in the country. “It is the first game of its kind which can be played by teaming up with friends, family and also for corporate team building. Freeing Group’s core mission is to provide a revolutionary gaming experience, coupled with teamwork and leadership development,” explains Owusu.

If you have an hour to kill, or if you are looking for a stimulating mental challenge, then you should try out Freeing Africa’s Real Escape Game at Maxmart 37.
