Police have intensified security at Chereponi in the Northern region, following clashes between supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that left one person dead and fourteen others injured.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer for the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said : “Yesterday there was a rally for both the NDC and the NPP. There was no problem from both sides, the rally ended peacefully. After the rally at both towns, both parties were coming in a convoy when they crossed their paths at a centralized location in the Chereponi township and that sparked a misunderstanding and a violent confrontation from both sides.Stones were hurled at each other.”

He said “the Police later managed to bring the situation under control and both sides were dispersed but at 12 midnight, they regrouped again and clashed at a different location.”

According to him, “the second clash was so violent that pavilions were burnt and after the clashes there was one person who lost his life.”

“He was badly beaten and he died as a result of that and 14 others were also injured,” he added.

He was however unable to tell what might have sparked the clashes , adding that the Police will soon launch investigations into the incident.

ASP Tetteh said five out of the fourteen who were injured had been transferred to the Yendi Hospital for treatment.

No arrest so far

ASP Tetteh further indicated that no arrest had so far been made in connection with the incident.

Asked why the Police had not yet made any arrest, he said :”we could not effect any arrest. The best we could do was to rely on the reinforcement which came on time. It was difficult to make an arrest because when the Police arrived most of them had dispersed.”

NDC, NPP supporters clash at Nana Addo’s residence

The incident follows a similar one that occurred at the residence of Nana Akufo-Addo, Flagbearer of the NPP.

Members of the two political parties clashed during a health walk. The Police had a hard time controlling the charged crowd, some of whom reportedly hurled stones into the residence of the opposition leader.
