The Chiefs and People of Avatime in the Volta Region have expressed gratitude to telecommunications company, Vodafone Ghana, for lending support to the celebration of the Avatime festival with an amount of GHC5,000 and assorted drinks.

Avatime is a popular rice growing area with large expanse of rice fields especially, brown rice. The annual festival is used as a platform to highlight the cereal and its nutritional and economic benefits to promote eco-tourism and raise funds for self-help developmental projects.

Speaking on behalf of the Avatime traditional area on the gesture, Harisson Kofi Abutiate, the chairman of the Avatime Oversight and Development Committee said:

“Vodafone has once again shown leadership by supporting indigenous activities such as this festival. I wish to say this donation will go a long way in ensuring the success of the Avatime festival and the preservation of our heritage.”

Commenting on the donation, Director of Legal and External Affairs at Vodafone Ghana, Gayheart Mensah said:

“Vodafone Ghana is interested in sustaining the rich culture of the communities in which we operate. We recognize that cultural identity is an inherent component in the lives of all people. It is against this backdrop that we have taken a step to be part of the Avatime festival.”

In the spirit of supporting local communities, Vodafone has undertaken similar exercises to support the New Juaben Traditional Council in the Eastern Region and the Dakpema Educational Fund in the Northern Region.  The company has also supported other festivals like the Kundum festival in Axim and the Homowo festival in the Greater Accra region.
