Regulator of the telecom industry, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has initiated moves aimed at clamping down on the continuous rise of unsolicited messages and calls via mobile networks in Ghana.
It follows the commencement of a review of the current Unsolicited Electronic Communications (UEC) code for telecom operators by the authority in a bid to control the influx of unsolicited text messages and calls.

According to NCA following the public agitation, it has initiated a revision of the current UEC code to service providers to help address the situation and ensure that consumers are adequately protected by controlling the influx of UECs channeled to consumers.
The authority which has also begun public consultations on the matter says views and comments from the public over the matter will end in January 2017.
This is not the first time the authority is embarking on such a move to check unsolicited electronic communications.
In 2013 it developed a number of measures to deal with the matter including a requirement for all mobile network operators and content providers to ensure that all messages which have not been subscribed to do not cost consumers.
Also service and content providers were obligated to use “START” and “STOP” for subscribers to either activate or de-activate all the non-transactional and promotional electronic communications among others.
