The President, John Mahama has disclosed that Ghana has achieved sufficiency in maize, yam and cassava production.

He has therefore indicated his government would take steps to ensure an increment in investment on the production of rice, sugar, poultry and tomatoes.

This he said will help reduce the country’s dependency on imports.

In a post on his Facebook page on Monday, the President promised that government will identify young people interested in agriculture while small-scale farmer groups will be supported with technical assistance.

Government over the years has been making efforts to attract the youth into taking up farming to create employment opportunities.

This is also aimed at curbing the upsurge in rural-urban migration in Ghana.

According to President Mahama, his government “wants the youth to understand that agriculture is not only for the elderly and that farming is a rewarding business.”
