The Old Students Association of the Osu Presbyterian Senior High School (OPOSA’89 year group) has donated some items and cash to the Osu correctional center.
Items donated to the Osu correctional center included; medicine, detergent, cooking oils, toilet rolls footwear and bags of rice worth over 4,000cedis.
Celebrating 25 years after leaving school, OPOSA’89 group also refurbished their school library.
The library will be inaugurated on Saturday, June 28, 2014.
A representative from the Department of Social and Community Development, Gifty Quansah expressed gratitude to the group for their kind gesture and said that she is more than glad because the facility survives on such donations.
According to her, the amount of money allocated to the center for their upkeep yearly is woefully inadequate. She noted that the budget allocated to them for the year is only GHC 500.
Madam Quansah also revealed that the facility has seen its other branches shut down due to the lack of funds to run the correctional center.
“The Osu Correctional facility therefore only serves the entire country; we cannot thrive on Ghc 500 every year. The facility houses juveniles who await trials from every region,’’ she said.
In 2013, about 250 children passed through and a facility of that nature cannot survive on such a meager amount of money.
The Osu Correctional Center used the opportunity to appeal to other corporate organizations and also called on government to come to their aid.
