The Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) has directed all its members in the major markets in Accra and Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to close their shops from tomorrow.

GUTA announced this today at a press conference in Accra, citing the worsening economic situation in the country. The association had earlier directed foreigners engaged in retail trading to vacate the markets by the end of this month.

The president of Ghana Union Traders Association George Ofori told Citi News that they await positive response from the government before they quiet down.

The association say  their protest would intensify by Friday, if they do not get a favourable response from the government.

The president of GUTA who made the declaration with support of his members at this press conference also said that they “are aware that security officials are in the market to prevent this activity from happening but we are ready to resist the police with all the strength that we have within our blood.”

They intend to get all the traders at the market who are members of GUTA to shutdown their shops by tomorrow morning.
