A flag raising ceremony has been organized to mark the 71st United Nations Day.
The event which took place on the forecourt of the State House, was graced by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Christine Evans-Klock, some Members of Parliament, Heads of UN Agencies, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and Senior Officers of the Security Agencies.
In a statement read on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Emmanuel Bombande commended the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and by extension, the United Nations (UN) for its immense contributions towards the socio-economic development aspirations of Ghana.
According to him, “the government of Ghana remains committed to strengthening her enduring partnership with the UNDP to build capacities and create livelihood opportunities for our people in line with the Better Ghana Agenda.”
Speaking on the theme, “71 Years for 17 Goals: Progress, Challenges and Prospects,” the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister seized the opportunity to commend the Armed Forces for their courage and dedication to the noble cause of the United Nations.
Collision with SDG Anniversary
The day’s celebration coincides with the 1st Anniversary adoption of the 2030 Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals aimed at shaping the development agenda of the world for the next 14 years.
The Goals, he reiterated, cover issues of infrastructure development and industrialization, addressing inequality within and among countries, promoting gender equality, harnessing clean and renewable energy, combating Climate Change, preserving the earth and, above all, eliminating poverty.
