The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra, Alfred Oko Vandepuije believes says there is nothing wrong with him braiding the hair and cooking for some electorates ahead of this year’s elections.

According to Mr Vandepuije, who is seeking election as Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma South constituency, his actions  demonstrate skills that could make him relate easily with the constituents.

Photos that circulated on social media last week showed the NDC parliamentary candidate braiding the hair, and helping some electorates with the preparation of banku on one of his campaign activities in the area.

But in an interview with GHOne TV, the Accra MCE said “leadership is all about letting the people know that you have the skills. If you are going to an MP for a community, you must identify with the people. I, as Oko Vandepuije have skills. Braiding people’s hair is part of the hairdressing business, the salon business. So me demonstrating in public that I have that skills, I identify with the salon operators. That under Oko Vandepuije, we’ll bring support to the salons.”oko-vanderpuiye-1

“With me turning the banku, it is me showing them that I can cook. I am bringing a message of hope to our restaurants, to our women who cook banku along the roads and sell them. What I am telling them is that, with me, there is going to be advancement, we will create better restaurants, we will help them to set up. Me going to the sewing centres, I am demonstrating that I know how to sew. I am identifying with the tailors and seamstress and that I will work with them. We will bring economic empowerment,” he added.

As the campaign for election 2016 intensifies and parliamentary candidates are using different of methods to entice voters.

Earlier this month, the NDC parliamentary candidate of the Klottey Korle Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Zanetor Rawlings embarked on her campaign ahead the December polls on a bicycle, an act many consider unusual of an aspiring public officer in Ghana.
