The University of Ghana (UG) College of Education is now offering some selected diploma programmes at some of its Regional Learning Centres including that of Tamale.

This follows the UG management’s decision to completely phase out diploma programmes at the end of the 2015/2016 academic year.

Vice Chancellor of the UG, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu in a speech read on his behalf brought this to the fore at the third matriculation ceremony of the Tamale campus of the College of Education.

“The University will re-introduce admissions for mature candidates seeking to pursue undergraduate programmes through the distance model with effect from the 2017/2018 academic year”, Prof. Owusu disclosed.

He also announced the introduction of eighteen (18) new undergraduate and graduate programmes in the university such as M.A. Educational Leadership and Management, MPhil Educational Leadership and Management; Bachelor of Arts in Education (Teaching and Non-Teaching) options and Bachelor of Science in Education (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) options at the College of Education.

He advised the students saying, “As you begin your studies at the University of Ghana, I want to encourage you to strive for excellence. I encourage you freshmen and women to take inspiration from those who have gone ahead of you and also work hard to attain laurels for yourselves, for the University and for the nation at large.”

One of the matriculants, Miss Sandra Okyerebea Lartey appealed to the university authority to reconsider its decision on withdrawing the distribution of Information, Communication and Technology tools which she observed aided students in their academic work.

She also entreated the UG authority to refurbish the Bolgatanga and Wa Learning Centres which described as death traps.

Miss. Lartey further appealed to the UG authority to increase the quota on admissions for the distance education programmes.

“This is because the success of every DE programme depends on numbers but it is becoming very clear that the numbers keep on decreasing over the years especially at the various centres.”

Secretary of the UG College of Education, Mrs. Emelia Adjei-Mensah administered the matriculation oath and implored the students to obedient.

The UG for the 2016/2017 academic year admitted students into programmes on the main Legon campus, the Korle Bu campus, the Accra City campus and the Distance Learning centres.

A total of 25, 295 applicants gained admission out of which 10,551 have so far registered.

The Distance Education programme registered a total of 1,494 fresh students out of which 43 were admitted at the Tamale Learning Centre.
