The Ghana Police Service has invited the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu, because of potentially incendiary comments he made ahead of the 2016 elections.

Bugri Naabu is reported to have revealed on a campaign platform in Nalerigu that the NPP will employ some macho men to guard ballot boxes in the December polls.

In a Citi News interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said Mr Naabu’s comments were concerning enough to merit a police inquiry.

He warned that, “on the day of elections, it is only the police or its sister agencies who have the authority, who are going to man the various polling stations” as it was it was improper for any individual to call for private security to police the ballot boxes.

“This is a serious concern and we think such a comment needs further investigations and that is why we are inviting him. We don’t need to hesitate because this is something that borders on national security.”

ASP Tetteh noted that the Police are being proactive with the issue because of the stakes ahead of the 2016 elections.

“If there is a problem, it will affect the beauty of the elections and some of the things that are being said can also result in the loss of property and life so we don’t have to sit down for some of these things to happen,” he stated
