A former Deputy Attorney-General (AG) and Minister of Justice, Kwame Osei Prempeh is warning government of dire consequences if funds are not immediately released to the Judiciary.
The ‘no money syndrome’ has hit many government institutions across the country and the latest is the Judiciary with reports indicating that the third arm of government is cash trapped.
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in a statement bemoaned the deplorable state under which some judicial installations across the country operate.
Speaking to Citi News, Osei Prempeh, who once served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Judiciary admonished government to act fast.
He blamed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of failing to adequately support state-owned institutions especially, the Judiciary.
According to him, the situation was worse under the leadership of the late President John Mills.
“In fact, the committee led by the late Owusu Ansah was always fighting the Minister of Finance for cutting down on the funding of the judiciary,” he recalled.
Osei Prempeh noted that if government wants to build a country of justice and law, “we need to be very serious with providing funds for the administration of justice.”
According to him, courts across the country are in a deplorable shape while accommodation for Judges are equally unworthy of the position they occupy.
These situations he said largely affects the morale of the workers in the judicial system and also contributes to corruption.
The former Deputy AG called for a concerted effort to ensure court houses and other facilities are in top shape.
