The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo has questioned why the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would advise Ghanaians not to drink the Kalyppo fruit drink because of its sugar content but proceed to construct a sugar factory at Komenda.
“I’m told a senior official is advising Ghanaians to stop drinking Kalyppo because it is not good for their health. Really?Why does he want to collapse that company. A company that is doing so well.Please ignore that comment, don’t listen to him. If sugar is bad why did they revamp the Komenda Sugar Factory-a factory which is not even working and yet they make a lot of noise about it,” Nana Addo said while addressing party faithfuls at Kwadaso Constituency in the Ashanti Region on Thursday.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah had cautioned Ghanaians, to stay away from Kalyppo fruit juice since as they risked being struck down with a disease called ‘Kalyppolitis’ – also swipe at the NPP and its Kalyppo challenge.
“The adults here, I am pleading with you to avoid taking Kalyppo because the sugar content is harmful to your health,” Mr. Debrah told the supporters in the Brong Ahafo Region.
About the Kalyppo challenge
A picture of Nana Akufo-Addo emerged on social media of him sipping Kalyppo fruit juice, ostensibly to mock his patronage of the fruit juice perceived to be for children.
But NPP supporters spun the narrative which encouraged party faithful and sympathizers to take pictures of themselves on social media in solidarity with their flagbearer.
The craze was in full effect at the NPP manifesto launch with former president Kufuor pictured enjoying some Kalyppo.
