NPP calls on IGP to probe Suhum Police Command

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to probe the Suhum Municipal Command following its handling some violent attacks in the Suhum constituency.

According to the NPP, the IGP’s assistance is being sought because of what they deem as the unfair treatment meted out to them by the Eastern Regional Police Command when politically motivated violence occurs.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RPndnkWJDbccsjb1PYprdaJuOTTZSC5l”]The party was upset with the perceived failure of the police to arrest some suspected National Democratic Congress (NDC) thugs who attacked Electoral Commission offices and destroyed equipment during the voter transfer exercise.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Akomeng Kissi, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP called on the IGP to “as a matter of urgency commence thorough investigations into all the cases and institute a probe into the conduct of the Suhum Municipal Commander.”

“We have come to the realisation that the Eastern Region Police Command, their divisional and district commanders are not being professional about their work,” he also said.

The confusion in the area and the accusations of police bias culminated in the party’s executives in the Suhum Constituency threatening to retaliate to any attacks against them from the NDC, a point that was reiterated at the press conference.

Mr. Akomeng Kissi said, “the Ghana Police Command in the Eastern Region has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that our civil approach to the incensed aggression of the NDC will not work. We therefore caution that we would be forced to adopt a new approach to defend our supporters and our interests if need be.”
