The Electoral Commission (EC) has said its district registration review officers are currently handling complaints made against some voters on the country’s electoral roll which are before some courts in the country.

According to the EC, it is hopeful the cases will be expedited to enable it finish compiling the 2016 voters register ahead of the December 7 polls.

“We are in the final stages of the preparation of the register. We have a few outstanding cases with the district registration review officer; objections to people’s names and deletions in the just ended exhibition of the voters register, as soon as this is accomplished, the register will be finalized for the political parties,” Director of Communications at the EC, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu told Citi News.

He noted that the commission will discuss the provisional register with the political parties once the review processes are concluded.

NPP wants over 5,000 names removed from register

The opposition New Patriotic Party wants a total of 5,656 names of voters removed from the electoral roll in the Volta Region and has file a case at the court to have its demands met.

The legal tussle mostly led by polling agents of the NPP seeks to prevent the registered voters, some of whom they claim are foreigners, from voting in the general elections.

Mr. Dzakpasu explained that it had appealed to the courts to expedite hearing of the cases.

“These are cases with the courts and the courts have a deadline to finish and as soon as they finish they [registration review officers] will give us the report and then we will finish up with the final stages of the register. The courts have been notified and we are all very assured that they would do as expected of them so that we can finish the process on time,” he added.
