Three crew members who were working on the Marine 711 vessel which was attacked by pirates on June 4, 2014 off the coast of Ghana have been sacked by their employers, World Marine Company.
According to a handwritten letter handed to the sailors, they were accused of failing to discharge their duties, hence the decision to sack them.
Some of the sailors who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity are however demanding compensation from their employers.
According to them, they subjected to severe beating when the pirates attacked their oil vessel.
“They slapped me so much that now when you talk, I can’t hear properly and blood is always oozing from my ears,” a sailor narrated his ordeal.
He described the sacking as unfair, saying, “after all that we went through, we come to work and they tell us that those of us who were on duty when the pirates attacked us have been dismissed.”
The sailor also added that three other individuals have been sacked “all because they asked for permission to visit the hospital for treatment.”
