The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) will hold a rally to observe the one year anniversary of the infamous demonstration over the credibility of the voter’s register in 2015 which saw police brutalize a number of the protesters for veering off the prescribed route.

The rally will come off tomorrow [Friday], September 16 at Okaishie drug lane at 1pm.

Expected to speak at the rally are the convener of the group; David Asante, along with Kennedy Agyapong, David, Sammy Awuku, Abu Ramadan, Hopeson Adoye, Ibrahim Adjei, Justice Adzakumah, Charles Owusu and Owusu Bempah.

The Alliance has said, “in commemoration of that fateful day when a peaceful demonstration was marred by the brute force of the security operatives, LMVCA is therefore calling on all democracy-loving Ghanaians to attend this rally for a progress report on the demand for a credible free fair open and transparent election.”

Background

On September 16, 2015, the LMVCA in collaboration with the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), Movement for Change, some opposition political parties and other civil society groups, held a demonstration to present a petition to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to demand a credible voters’ register for the 2016 elections.

The demonstration was disrupted when the police and security operatives charged on protesters armed with batons, hot water cannons and tear gas, leading to several civilian casualties.

The police have maintained that protestors were acting violently towards them hence their actions but some protesters Citi News spoke to in the aftermath of the incident said protesters became violent after the Police attacked them.
