A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa has said Ghana retrogressed and stagnated during the two-decade rule of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to Prof Akosa, Mr. Rawlings failed to use his 19-year rule to make a difference in the development of the country in comparison to other Heads of States who presided over their countries during the same period.

Speaking at the 47th J.B. Danquah memorial lectures, the former Director General of the Ghana Health Service said the country missed the opportunity to turn around its fortunes for the better during that period.

He noted that politics should be aimed at improving the lives of citizens but Ghana under the rule of Rawlings “stagnated and in so many ways, retrogressed.”

He recalled that heads of state of other countries who ruled at the same time as ex-President Rawlings had the conviction “to move their countries from third world to first world but Ghana on the other hand, stagnated.”

The J. B. Danquah Memorial Lecture Series was instituted in 1968 in memory of a foundation member of the Academy, Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah, who died in prison in February 1965, fighting for freedom in all its manifestations.
