Ghanaians will today have another rare opportunity to view a partial solar eclipse which is expected to last for about three hours.

According to experts, the phenomenon will occur between 6:13am to 9am today.

“We are going to have something we call partial eclipse meaning that not the entire sun will be blocked by the moon. The next one we are going to experience in Ghana will also be a partial eclipse on February 26, 2017. After that we are not going to see solar eclipse here until the next ten years.” Dr Bernard Asaabre, an astronomer at the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute added.

The last time the country experienced a partial solar eclipse was three years ago, on November 3, 2013.

Partial social eclipses occur when the moon, comes between the Sun and the Earth but don’t align in a perfectly straight line.

Dr Bernard Asaabre however cautioned Ghanaians to desist from watching the phenomenon with the naked eye or ordinary sunglasses.

“The sun glasses are not good for viewing the eclipse. If you go to some places they try to use some plastic bags, they are all not good,” he added.
