The national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have dismissed claims that they are seeking to remain in office indefinitely by delaying the elections for new executives.

A deputy General Secretary of the party, Kofi Adams on Eyewitness News remarked that when incumbent executives stay longer in office, they end up becoming unpopular.

“It is even to the disadvantage to the incumbent to keep pushing election further and further back,” he said.

He noted that the election of new executives was delayed due to the introduction of a biometric system for the registration of all card bearing members of the NDC.

Mr. Adams was however unable to give a specific date on which nominations will be opened for national executive positions.

He declared his intention to contest for an executive position when nominations open but failed to reveal the position he will be vying for.

According to him, he would have to “do further consultations because this is a political party so I’m speaking to elders, I’m speaking to supporters across the country. When that is concluded, I will announce.”

The NDC has set October 24 to 26, 2014 for the election of new national executives to lead the party in the 2016 general elections.

Before that, the party has scheduled dates for branch elections, constituency elections and regional conferences.

All these are expected to end by October 5, 2014.
