Barclays Africa has awarded 16 African journalists with scholarships to attend the Barclays Africa Data Journalism Master Class at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa from August 24th to 27th.

The scholarship beneficiaries are from eight countries; namely Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

The scholarship also covers attendance to the Highway Africa conference, the largest journalism conference on the continent, taking place from 28 to 29 August, 2016.

The awards were decided after a competitive selection process. In Ghana, Fred Dzakpata – Deputy Head of the Business Desk from Starr FM, Jessica Acheampong –  Business Reporter from the Daily Graphic, and Norvan Acquah-Hayford – Broadcast Journalist from Citi FM, were selected for the 2016 intake.

“The Barclays Africa Data Journalism Master Class is a high-level training programme that seeks to equip business journalists with technical skills to enhance their reporting on financial matters. We believe that strong, effective and objective media is best placed to tell the African story of growth and development. We remain committed to support Highway Africa’s training and conference initiatives,” says Barclays Africa Head of Communications: Africa Regions, Webster Malido.

Barclays has been a Highway Africa partner of this gathering of media professionals, academics, students and civil society, for the past 15 years
