Residents of Sika Ne Asem in the Western Region and its surrounding communities say they now live in fear following the death of five people on the Fulesu River.

The River, which serves as a means of transport to the communities claimed the life of five people on Saturday.

The bodies of the deceased are yet to be retrieved.

Reports indicate that the rescue effort which is locally coordinated is being hampered by constant rains in the area.

The state of a wooden bridge on the river scares most of the residents.

According to a resident from the area, Fredrick Quansah, a project was initiated about eight years ago to construct a metal bridge to ease transportation across the river.

He however stated that construction works on the bridge had been abandoned.

“There is no other road with the exception of the bridge. Wherever you are coming from, you need to cross the river before you can get to the other community to get a vehicle,” Mr. Quansah explained.

He stated that although residents in the community are worried about the development, they have no other means of transportation to resort to.
