Residents from some communities in the Ho Municipality in the Volta Region, took to the streets Wednesday morning to demonstrate against government over bad roads and inadequate electricity.
The protesters from Hodzo, Takla and Kpenoe, warned they would not be taking part in the December polls if government fails to address their concerns.
The demonstration comes a week after some residents in the same municipality; mostly sympathizers of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), organized a walk to show their appreciation to President John Mahama’s administration for development works in the municipality.
One of the demonstrators spoke to Citi News’ Volta regional correspondent, King Norbert Akpablie, and echoed the frustration of the protesters.
He explained that “we are on the street because our road is very bad. The distance from Ho to Hodzo is a short distance, but because of the road, the drivers take GHc 5 cedis, GHc 7 and motorbikes take GHc 12.”
“We are pleading on our MP to work on our road for us. Every week he brings different contractors but they have not done anything about the road up till now,” he added.
He also warned that they would not be voting if the road is not constructed saying, “We are pleading with the government to help us so that our road will be constructed before the vote if not, we will not be able to vote.”
Ho MCE calls for calm
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ho Municipal Assembly, Fafa Adinyira, however called for calm saying the roads will be constructed soon.
Without giving any timelines, she simply said, “Your road will be done so just hold on… What I am saying and assuring is that, your road will be done so just relax. The road is going to be done. Nothing will stop it.”
