The labour ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has suspended new admissions of patients due to the breakdown of some equipment.
Citi News’ checks at the facility revealed that the anesthetic machine at the wards’ theatre has broken down, forcing staff to refer emergency cases to other facilities.
Earlier reports indicated that, the labour ward had been closed down, but a visit to the hospital showed that patients on admission were being attended to.

However, a staff of the maternity department who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity revealed that, the action had become necessary because only three out of the seven emergency cases received yesterday [Monday], were attended to due to the breakdown of the machine. The rest were referred to other health facilities.
Though there was no indication of when the situation will be fixed, she explained that the only way to get attended to was by contacting a friend or relative to help administer care .
The situation however implies that pregnant women with complications or emergency cases, would have to look for alternative sources of care.
The hospital however is attending to patients already on admission.
