President John Mahama’s announcement there would be no social media ban on Election Day, has been welcomed by the President of policy think thank, IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe.
During the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) campaign launch at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium in the Central Region, President Mahama was categorical in his assurance to Ghanaians of same.
The Police Service bore the brunt of public criticism when the Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor, indicated his outfit was considering a shut down on social media activities due to perceived tension it could create on the day of the polls.
A number of civil society organisations kicked against any possible ban saying it would be an affront to the constitutional rights of citizen.
But following the President’s assurance, the IMANI President is happy there was one less avenue of possible tension ahead of the elections.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Cudjoe said, “Thankfully this has been laid to be rest by the President and I think even though he deserves commendation, I think this election should not be allowed to have any tense moments that could be exploited by provocateurs.”
Describing the issue of the ban as a non-starter, he said the police should instead “begin to use the medium to educate people on social media and they can even do it on WhatsApp and all the other social media platforms.”
Mr. Cudjoe contended that the issue of social media “is not a question of having an advantage or disadvantage.”
He further suggested that the Police “should enlist professionals who could teach them how to use Social Media for positive results. I think that is the way to go.”
