4 things to know about taking photos at Chale Wote 2016

2015 saw a record turnout at the CHALE WOTE Street Art Festival. While the vast majority of visitors took pictures in good faith, at least five large corporations, including Red Bull, Vodafone, Hello Foods, Blue Skies and Bel Aqua, came without any prior communication with the festival and used CHALE WOTE to promote their brands without seeking or receiving any form of approval from the organizers or participating artists.

When a for-profit corporation uses the images of artists’ work to promote their brand without any knowledge, approval or compensation, something has gone terribly wrong. In order to protect against this violation, the festival has put in place a more specific policy for media access.

The main points are:

  1. Commercial use photography and video requires paid credentials (for festival access and content) and must be certified through the official channels established by the festival.
  2. Bonafide media personnel with valid credentials need to simply fill out and submit the online registration form, and keep your credentials visible while at the festival.
  3. If you are shooting with a professional camera for personal use, you do not have to pay the festival anything. But you do have to get accreditation. You can fill out the form online and pick up your badge at Brazil House in James Town between Tuesday, August 16 and Friday, August 20-21, an accreditation booth will be located at the Sempe Mantse forecourt.
  4. We welcome and encourage the open and free use of cell phone photography and video for personal use and personal social media.
