Hafiz Saeed, leader of so-called Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan and Pakistan, died in a US drone strike on 26 July, the US believes.

The Afghan intelligence agency said at the time it believed Saeed had died in Achin in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar.

But IS insisted its leader was still alive, while confirming another senior figure had been killed.

Shahidullah Shahid had defected to IS from the Pakistani Taliban.

As many as 30 militants may have been killed in the single attack, including another senior member, Malvi Abdurrahim Muslimdost.

Such losses would have come as heavy blow for the group.

It was only the third time that US-led forces had agreed to use drones against IS in Afghanistan.

Nangarhar is one of the areas where IS militants are most active in Afghanistan.
