Mr Anthony Mensah, Waste Management Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has advised the public not to look up to the assembly to clean their environment for them.

He said it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure that his or her environment becomes clean to rescue themselves from diseases.

Speaking at the close of activities marking a special Homowo clean up exercise at Ga Mashie, Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, and Tema Station all in Accra, he said the people should be made to appreciate that a healthy environment should be a major concern in the communities.

Mr Mensah asked the public to understand that the government alone cannot address the numerous environmental problems in Accra.

He acknowledged the contribution of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union drivers at the Tema Station for their support to the AMA to enhance sanitation and environmental hygiene in the area.

Mr Bernard Mats Yingura, Osu Klottey Sub-Metropolitan Director of the AMA, also advised the public to adopt a positive character towards sanitation to save the government from spending so much money to control waste.

He urged the residents in Accra to change their attitude to ensure good health and reduce the frequent visit to hospital.

Mr Yingura said there is a limit to the efforts of the authorities, adding that, the biggest challenge rests on the people within their localities.

He condemned the apathy shown by the people towards the cleanup and appealed to the schools and churches in the communities to propagate the message of good sanitation and environmental hygiene.
