The Upper East Regional branch of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has provided relief items to about 1,308 flood victims in four districts; Talensi, Builsa South, Bongo and Nabdam.
The relief items include blankets, mattresses, foodstuffs, mosquito nets, buckets, plates, Basins and other household items.
This is the second phase of relief to flood victims after heavy downpour displaced scores of residents in the region on the 20th of July,2016.
Speaking to Citi News in Bolgatanga, Regional Coordinator of NADMO Mr. Alfred Saavog said NADMO had enough relief items to temporarily support flood victims in the region after a thorough assessment of persons affected by the floods.
“As at 4th of August, a total of 2,672 persons and 953 farmlands have affected by the floods in Bolgatanga, Builsa North, Builsa South, Bongo,Talensi and the Nabdam districts.
We gave relief items to flood victims in the Bolgatanga nad Builsa North districts and today we are distributing relief items to the Nabdam, Builsa South, Talensi and the Bongo districts.”
Mr. Saavog impressed on residents and schools built on water ways to move upland during the rainy season and cautioned people to desist from acquiring lands in flood-prone areas.
He also bemoaned the attitude of some officials at the various assemblies, Land commission and Town and Country planning who issue building permits to ‘recalcitrant’ persons to build on water ways, stressing that such officials should be sanctioned drastically to serve as deterrent to others.
Mr. Saavog added that, the passage of the NADMO bill into law will give NADMO legal backing to demolish building on water ways in consultation planners in the assemblies.
Mr. Saavog hinted that, NADMO has embarked on training residents and farmers along the white Volta and adopting strategic measures ahead of the spill of the Bagre dam from Burkina Faso anytime soon to avoid causalities during the spillage.
