The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on government to open up the constitution amendment process to eradicate that winner-takes-all mentality in Ghanaian politics.
According to the Chairman of the IEA Advisory Committee, Archbishop Palmer Buckle, there is the need for the government to engage the public for a broader consensus in governance
“There is the need for further consultation before the referendum takes place. We believe that something is missing from the wide paper because it did not address the worry of winner takes it all” he said.
He further entreated stakeholders in the ongoing constitutional review to critically consider the propositions made by the CRC to deal with the winner-takes-all approach in Ghanaian politics.
“We think it has been lost sight of and from your questions I can see that you are also conscious of the fact that, this winner-takes-all is a problem and it doesn’t look like it has been addressed”
The Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) was created and constituted by the late President John Mills and on January 11, 2010, he inaugurated the Commission to review the 1992 Constitution.
The committee consulted members of the general public and later proffered some possible amendments.
