Some hoteliers in Ghana have called for infrastructure improvement in tourism sector to help generate revenue for the country.

According to them, the lack of investment to facilitate better road infrastructure as well as good communication among others has compelled tourists, especially foreigners to shy away from sector.

Speaking with Citi Business News, the Chief Executive Officer of JOVAGO Travel, now Jumia Travel, Paul Midy urged government to invest in the sector.

“We have teams on the grounds. You know I would say maybe in Ghana there is one step right. In Ghana quality of hotel is good but the roads leading to these hotels are the problem,” he said.

“Most roads are quite dilapidated and this prevents tourists from going to such nice hotels. When this happens, hoteliers run at huge losses. This challenge is one of the huge ones facing the industry,” he lamented.

Touching on E-Tourism, Mr. Midy stated that Ghanaians are warming up to it and this is easing human transactions through the internet.

“It’s about making sure people understand its risk free and its right. People don’t know about it so they should try and usually when they try we measure it,” he said.

He pointed out that up to 80% Jumia’s customers have tried it and are recommending it

“They are warming up to online transactions and this is a positive sign for us at Jumia,” he said.

He maintained that the main objective is to make sure people try it, hence it must be advertised.

“You just go on the website, you will have access to about 25,000 hotels, you look at the profiles, customer review and you choose your hotel,” he said.
