Human rights activists have condemned security personnel at the Accra Mall for mistreating three ladies believed to have stolen from one of the shops, Mr. Price.
Footages on social media show security personnel at the mall ordering the ladies who allegedly stole panties from the Mr. Price shop to crawl from the shop to the main entrance, as on-lookers taunted and took pictures and videos.
An eyewitness told Citi News, the girls were made to pay for the stolen items they allegedly stole and subsequently humiliated.
However, a human right activist, Bernice Sam in an interview with Citi News indicated that the act was an abuse of the ladies’ rights and subsequently advised the girls to immediately contact a lawyer “who should go back to the shop and ask questions.”
According to her, the best the shop authorities could have done was hand the ladies over to the police if indeed they had stolen from the shop, stressing that “you don’t have any right to subject anybody who picked an item from your shop to such kind of treatment.”
She pointed out that the girls “have been publicly ridiculed” describing it as “an affront to women in this country”.
“I am not condoning the act, but we need to bear in mind that when you publicly ridicule somebody, that person can sue you for damages and the girls should take action immediately,” she said.
Madam Sam also mentioned that management of the Accra Mall should be included in the law suit if the girls decide to sue “because they cannot allow their security persons who are their agents to do that to people.”
Meanwhile, Citi News’ efforts to reach the management of the Accra Mall over the issue have proved futile.
