The newly-elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abetifi Constituency in the Eastern Region, has been sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament.

Bryan Acheampong won the by-election in the constituency on Saturday, after  polling 14,015 votes representing 89.97% of the total votes cast.

He fended off competition from Vida Konadu Ennin of the Independent People’s Party (IPP) who polled 469 votes, Edmund Ofori Nkansah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) who polled 439 votes, and the United Front Party (UFP)’s Kenneth Kotey Nikoi, who had 406 votes.

The by-election, which was in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, was necessitated by the death of the former NPP MP, Peter Wiafe Pepera, who died on May 21 at the 37 Military Hospital.

NDC abstained from the by-election

The by-election was without representation from the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC’s parliamentary nominee for the constituency, Emmanuel Tabi, had picked the EC nomination forms to contest  but failed to file them, following his party’s decision to pull out of the race.

The party’s Constituency Chairman for Abetifi, Gershon Afianyo, said that participating in this by-election just 3 months to the election would have been a waste of resources.

“Looking at the time and how close the general election is, we don’t think it is prudent for us to go into this election,” he told Citi News.
