Familiar songs playing heavily, young Ghanaians screaming with joy, and the heat blazing on that unusual Summer day, that was the scene at Ghana party in the park on Saturday the 16th of July 2016 in London.
Being there felt different than simply hearing about it. It was with a feeling of thrill, unfamiliarity but also extreme pride and gladness that I walked capturing the moments.
Pride indeed seeing so many Ghanaians freely owning the vast grounds of a park, acknowledging their culture and owning it, in a country very far from their own.
A yearly event organised by AKWAABAUK, ‘Ghana Party in the Park’ has been in existence for over ten years, and has now become one of the most anticipated yearly events for many British Ghanaians.
In every corner of the park, you could see different activities happening, all with the same motive of celebrating Ghana and the culture, from facial painting of the Ghana flag to dancing lessons and performances.
Every year, the event introduces familiar artistes, and this year was not different. From Mr. Eazi to ‘Adonai’, rapper Sarkodie walking to the stage and being cheered by the multitude of Ghanaians as well as non-Ghanaians.
The African printed clothes also proudly made their apparitions, as both men and women, with their outfits and actions proudly stood to mean “I love Ghana” !
