The Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has promised to ratify the Marrakesh treaty for the blind and partially impaired before the end of the year, 2016.

The Marrakesh Treaty adopted on June 27, 2013, has a clear humanitarian and social development dimension, and aims to create a set of mandatory limitations and exceptions for the benefit of the blind, visually impaired, and disabled persons.

According to the Sector Minister, Nana Oye Lither, her Ministry has commenced processes to present the treaty to Parliament for ratification, and is working with the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations to have it processed.

“We know that the utmost demonstration of our commitment is when we actually ratify the Marrakesh treaty. The process is in force and being led by the ministry of employment and labor relations and we are partnering with them to make sure that it is a reality. Before December 2016, the Marrakesh treaty will be duly ratified by the state of Ghana.”

Nana Oye Lither was speaking after receiving a petition from the Ghana Blind Union for the quick ratification of the treaty and its implementation before the end of the month.

The union also called on the attorney general to help fast-track their request.
