Sambus Geospatial Limited (SGL), distributors of ESRI Geographic Information System (GIS) software and technological solutions in Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Gabon and Liberia, has donated ArcGIS Software valued at $500,000.00 to the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) at a short ceremony at Sunyani.

The package, which has multiple ArcGIS licenses for over 3000 users, will be deployed for research, education management, teaching and learning to inculcate spatial thinking into the learning experience of students in the University.

Mr. Darko said the donation was in fulfillment of a promise to resource the young University with the latest software to aid UENR in teaching and research, especially in the areas of natural resources and other related disciplines.

In addition, Mr. Frank Yaw Ofori, the Assistant Manager in charge of Technical Sales and Marketing, highlighted that the software is not only for the students, but should be used by the Institution’s administration. The General Manager of SGL, which also operates in Liberia and Gabon, and distributes ESRI range of software products, further pledged the commitment of his company to provide support and training to staff in the deployment of the software.

As part of the donation, two nominees from the University were given free passes to attend the yearly ESRI User conference at San Diego, USA, from 27th June to 1st July, 2016.

Prof Daniel Obeng -Ofori, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University who received the donation, expressed appreciation to Sambus Geospatial Limited for their unprecedented gesture and remarked that the donation was timely.

Prof Obeng –Ofori said the donation will aid the UENR in the re-accreditation of some of its natural resources based programmes as well as provide opportunity for students to become conversant with the leading GIS software in the world-ArcGIS Platform, and promised that UENR will ensure that the donation was put to good use.

A tree was planted and watered by the donors, to commemorate the donation. Present at the ceremony were MR A.K. Boateng, Registrar, Dr Amos kabo-bah, Head of the University’s Earth Observation Centre.
