The final result in the Nkwanta South constituency National Democratic Congress (NDC) Primary has seen the incumbent MP in the Gershon Gbediame, floored by one of his challengers, Geoffrey Kini.
Geoffrey Kini won in a landslide polling 7,637 to Gbediame’s 591 in the primary that recorded over 12,000 voters.
The three other aspirants in the primary; Dr Felix Anebor, Solomon Bagme, and Charles Narayana Osei Nyarko also polled 2,342, 1,626 and 69 votes respectively
Kini’s victory brought to an end the five-term reign of the incumbent MP, who has been an MP since January 1997
The primary was not without incident as the start of the voting was delayed by over three hours after some confusion over the credibility of the voters’ register halted the distribution of polling materials.
The five candidates challenged the credibility of the register for the polls as reports indicated there were three different versions of the register; one provided by the Electoral Commission (EC), another by the aspirants and one provided by the constituency.
It took the intervention from the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Francis Ganyaglo, to bring a resolution to the impasse after a crunch meeting as the candidates agreed to use the register presented by the EC.
The primary eventually went ahead under heavy police presence at the various polling centres.
