The Electoral Commission (EC) has debunked reports that National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) card registrants voted in the just ended Abetifi constituency by-election.

This is response to some media reports that EC officers in the constituency permitted voters who registered with a NHIS cards to vote in the Abetifi by-election despite the Supreme Court judgment declaring such registrants illegible to vote.

[contextly_sidebar id=”vEyqZFglAqAY9YXSu9EioQ67GSGcxkeR”]The EC in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Eric Dzakpasu, has however said it does not have on record any persons who registered with the NHIS card in 2012.

According to the statement, the EC said, “We currently do not have any records on our electoral database of anyone in the Abetifi Constituency who registered with the NHIS card in 2012. So it cannot be accurate that the deleted NHIS card registrants are being allowed to vote in the ongoing by-election in Abetifi.”

The EC further urged any individual with evidence of such claims to make them known during the Voter’s Register exhibition exercise scheduled to start on Monday.

“We are still expecting anyone who has such record to make it available to the Commission during the 2016 Voter’s Register exhibition exercise which is scheduled to start on Monday 18th July, 2016.”

We currently do not have any records on our electoral database of anyone in the Abetifi Constituency who registered with the NHIS card in 2012.

So it cannot be accurate that the deleted NHIS card registrants are being allowed to vote in the ongoing by-election in Abetifi.

We are still expecting anyone who has such record to make it available to the Commission during the 2016 Voter’s Register exhibition exercise which is scheduled to start on Monday 18th July, 2016.

Once again we would like to entreat the media to verify such claims with the Commission’s appointed Spokespersons before proceeding to publish or broadcast.

Thank you: Head of Communications
