NMC clears GBC board of wrongdoing

The National Media Commission (NMC) has cleared the governing board of the state broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation of any wrongdoing.

The GBC workers union had written to the NMC  to dissolve their board accusing it of “micromanaging the affairs of GBC.”

They also accuse the board of misappropriating GBC’s internally generated funds by “illegally” employing directors without recourse to due process.

[contextly_sidebar id=”j0NRm6lzsVampB78YPdQv79Ocv8gGmmp”]But speaking on Eyewitness News, George Sarpong, Executive Secretary of NMC debunked the claims saying their investigations proved otherwise.

“The GBC union made a number of allegations to the commission. The commission established a committee to independently investigate the claims and the committee took each of the claims one by one and gave the union the opportunity to prove the case against the people. They could not substantiate any of the claims they made.”

“They took time to investigate this matter thoroughly beyond the claim that the GBC union made. The commission went out of its ways and investigate further into the matter and found that those allegations were unsustainable,” Mr. Sarpong added.

The NMC Executive Secretary said the board has engaged in productive activities which has yielded some good returns to the GBC but blamed the impasse on communication lapses.

“On the contrary, the committee found that the board had engaged itself in very productive activities that helped the institution but there is some communication gap between board and union.”

He noted that the board had met the union on a number of occasions to explain to them, “but the union still stood to its grounds.”

Angry GBC workers lock out board members

Workers of GBC last Wednesday locked their board members out of the corporation’s premises.

This follows a resolution that was passed by the union barring members of the GBC board chaired by Richard Kwame Asante from entering the premises.

NMC betrayed us

The workers also accused the NMC of betraying them by lodging a complaint with the Police in relation to their prohibition of the GBC board members from entering the premises.

They further accused the commission of siding with the GBC board to run the state corporation down.
