EC didn’t involve us in deletion process – Ramadan’s Lawyer

Frank Davies, Lawyer for former PNC Youth Organizer, Abu Ramadan, has said the Electoral Commission should have involved them in carrying out the Supreme Court’s order of deleting the names of NHIS card registrants from the electoral roll.

The Commission on Tuesday said it had deleted more than 56,000 names of persons who registered with NHIS cards from the register, in line with the Supreme Court’s order.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bSk1W7Gm5l8wfpTrq7GlSv1yi85dook8″]The Commission has subsequently announced that re-registration of the affected people, using lawful procedures, will begin from July 18 to August 7.

But Mr. Davies in an interview with Citi News said the EC failed to consult him and his client during the process of deletion.

“Up till now, whatever the EC is doing, we have not been involved in it. The very least thing they could have done was to have involved us. They claim at all times that they have the primary record of those who registered with the NHIS cards and the list they have put out is the full list of NHIS registrants.”

He further claimed that, the EC’s 56,000 names it presented to the Court as the total number of persons who registered with NHIS cards was just conjured.

He based his argument on the fact that the EC has since the order stated that, it will delete other names which also got onto the register using the NHIS card, but were not captured on the list presented to the Supreme Court.

“Is it not curious that after they presented to the court what they said was the full list, they are calling on people to also come and  prove to them that they registered with NHIS cards and their names are not on the list. As we maintained in court, whatever they brought out is conjured.”
